Should Your Child Stay Engaged In Education During Holiday Breaks?
This is a great time for students to take a rest and take a true break from school.
During the holidays, most students get an extended break. This is a great time for students to take a rest and take a true break from school. The weekends are never enough time for a break with weekend activities and other obligations. While education is very important, it is also just important for students to take a break and spend time with family and friends.
However, it is also important to engage our children’s minds during down time. This can be done in a fun way, and I think that is the best way to keep your children engaged when they are on a holiday break.
Here are a few ideas that you can use.
Engage your children in holiday meal preparations.
When it is time to purchase the groceries for the holiday meal, have your child help you establish the budget. This is a very helpful math skill that they can use as they become adults. You can also have them go grocery shopping with you to compare prices, identify which items are a better buy based on the unit cost and select the best choices. Once the items are purchased, then you can have them help you prepare the meal or certain dishes. This not only helps him with learning how to prepare food but also how to use appropriate measurements.
Have your children create a family game to play at family gatherings.
When family members come together it is a great time to play games, whether it is a trivia game, a get to know you game or a board game. Instead of using a purchased game, challenge your child to create a family game. This game could be based on family history or things that most people don’t know about various family members. They could also create a general trivia game based upon things that they are learning in school or a topic that is of interest to many of the members of the family. This helps your children with their writing skills and their ability to complete a task and lead it.
Encourage your children to make homemade gifts and decorations.
This kind of activity is not just for young children. Children of any age can create homemade gifts for family members or decorations for your home. Even as a high school student, my Mom asked me to create a centerpiece every year for our holiday dinner tables. This will allow your child to be artistic and creative and serve as a point of pride for them. You can also have your child do the research to determine the costs of the materials that they will need to create the gifts or decorations to infuse their cost comparison skills and math as well. If your child is interested in making home made gifts for family members, you could encourage them to do this as a hobby throughout the year. It could even turn into a home-based business for them if they really get into it. This would help them learn and develop skills to run a business which would give them a whole new skill set.
